Second-grade instruction prepares students to account for the thoughts, experiences, and emotions of others with the same level of consideration they give themselves. They build upon their past experiences as they strive to make choices that foster a positive, inclusive community.

  • Teacher’s Lesson Guide: This is an instructional manual that guides teachers on how to implement each lesson, and offers suggestions on discussion questions. 
  • Student Journals: Vibrant workbooks that provide visual and manipulative tools to seamlessly promote student learning and skill development in connection to each Fly Five lesson.
  • Poster Packs: Vocabulary-based posters that integrate life skills and literacy in the classroom, as well as graphic organizers to help students brainstorm and organize ideas and new information.
  • Scenario Cards: Skill-aligned cards that offer a variety of questions and prompts for building academic, behavioral, social and emotional skills.
  • The Mindful Student: Twenty grade-specific, versatile mindfulness activities that facilitate emotional regulation, self-awareness, and overall student well-being and correspond with a core lesson within the curriculum.
  • Read-Alouds: Twenty read-alouds aligned to a Lexile range featuring the Center City Kids and showcasing their life skills as they navigate developmentally appropriate situations. Part of the Teacher’s Lesson Guide and a digital teacher resource.

  • Digital Platform: A Learning Management System (LMS) that functions as a virtual library and instructional delivery platform for Fly Five materials.
  • Teacher Resource: Additional information that contextualizes the lessons and allows for stronger instruction and more in-depth learning through activities, journal pages, and writing prompts. 
  • School-to-Home Connection: A weekly newsletter to help bridge the gap between school and home, filled with engaging activities that encourage growth beyond the classroom.
  • Answer Keys: Aligns with the Student Journal and can be used as a guide to drive student focus, engagement, and discussion.
  • Helpful Hints: A resource that offers solutions to the questions and challenges that may arise when implementing the curriculum.
  • Professional Development: Ongoing curriculum implementation support for teachers through the Fly Five Implementation Support Package.

Overview

  • Second graders explore other people’s perspectives more in depth and practice collaborating with all of their peers. Through vocabulary posters and interactive learning structures, they work on refining their ideas while remaining respectful of alternative ideas or opinions. Second grade students are able to hold themselves accountable for their actions and make thoughtful, constructive decisions.
